Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF) is an annual International Festival that takes place every May in Athens with the aim to bring together the digital arts community with a broader audience. The festival was established in 2005, under the title Athens Video Art Festival, as an initiative of the non-profit organization Multitrab Productions. Athens Video Art Festival was founded in 2005 with the intention to offer a platform to video art, installations and live performances. Within the following 10 years, the Festival gradually evolved and included more art forms, such as web art, interactive installations, animation, digital image, performances, applications and workshops, exploring creative aspects of technology and digital culture. In 2012, the Festival introduced the subtitle “International Festival of Digital Arts & New Media” in order to communicate the wide spectrum of its activities and events. As of January 2015, the Festival changed its name into Athens Digital Arts Festival.
Short History
The first edition of Athens Digital Arts Festival took place in April 2005 at the cultural space Thira Technis, in Athens. Although it was newly introduced, the festival received 180 artworks submissions and hosted 137 of them with the aim of supporting innovative artistic expression.
From 2007 to 2011, the main venue of the festival was the cultural space “Technopolis” of the Municipality of Athens where 1,544 artworks from local and international artists were hosted. Through these years the festival presented artworks in its three main categories: video art, installations and live performances, and in the new ones such as web art, animation and digital image, which were introduced in 2009. It also collaborated with other great festivals, such as Transmediale (DE), Cologne OFF (DE), LPM (IT), videoholica (BG), IN-EDIT (ES), onedotzero (UK), art:screen (SE) and more.
In the years 2012 and 2013 the festival expanded its boundaries, presenting its activities in the historic center of Athens with the purpose to map and shape the cultural potential of the district. Under the titles “Visualize Athens” (2012) and “Living Athens” (2013) the festival contributed to the revitalization of the urban artistic dynamics and the aesthetic reformation of the city. This initiative was supported by a significant number of volunteers, Greek Municipalities and international festivals and artists.
In 2014, celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the Festival returned to the cultural space “Technopolis” of Municipality of Athens, as an honor to the venue that had for years hosted the festival’s initiatives. The festival completed ten years of successful organizations, presenting a program that went beyond traditional boundaries between disciplines and media, offering perspectives on creative crossovers between technology and digital arts. Some of the highlights were the live performances “Abandonded cities” by Hauschka and “Late Speculation” by Nonotak as well as the installation “80 prepared dc-motors, cotton balls, cardboard boxes” by Zimoun.
In 2015, the festival renew its name to Athens Digital Arts Festival in order to embrace its continuous development. In this framework, it expanded its spectrum in eight official categories, installations, web art, video art, animation, performances, digital image, workshops and music under the theme “Public Space_s”. Always engaged with the goal to revitalize the center of the city and its artistic dynamic, ADAF 2015 took place in the historic center of Athens having as its main venue “Diplarios School” as well as two main squares of Athens for parallel activities. The festival hosted the works of 150 artists from Greece and abroad, who shared their own narratives with the audience, redefining the notion of public space both in the digital environment and urban space. Some of the artists and international festivals participated in this year’s festival were: !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Karl Heinz Heron (DE), Julian Oliver (NZ), Martin Bricelj Baraga (SI), Martin Reiche (DE), MADATAC (ES), IMPAKT (NL), VIDEONALE (DE), Cologne OFF (DE), videoholica (BG), artvideoKOELN (DE) e.t.c.
Up to now
Over the last eleven years, ADAF has been proudly devoted to the support of innovative and artistic expression, establishing strong bonds with local and international artists and audiences, institutions, art foundations, schools, universities, galleries and museums and a number of 46 collaborating international festivals.
With a solid focus on digital arts, Athens Digital Arts Festival heads on its 12th edition, taking place in May 2016, with the aim to raise public awareness regarding contemporary digital culture and familiarize the wider audience with new media and art, through its various exhibitions and workshops. In addition, it introduces a new category under the title “ADAF Award” and expands its activities into an international territory by co-organizing the Dubai Digital Arts Festival.

WOW.18 / USA is the 18th and so far most comprehensive manifestation of „The W:OW Project – We Are One World“ and the 1st one in USA @ Torrance Art Museum.
Running between 21 July and 14 December 2018 @ TAM, the screening program series of „The W:OW Art Film & Video Festival“ are presenting the entire artvideo program as it was presented at 10 the venues in 2017 including more than 125 art films & videos by 125 artists from about 30 countries selected by 10 guest curators from Mexico, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, Italy, Israel, Austria & Russia and the German Wilfried Agricola de Cologne as a chief curator and director of „The W:OW Project“ – packed into 20 curated, conceptual programs.
According to its concept of and reflecting the diversity of life, in general, and human existence, in particular, „The W:OW Project“ program would like to present a diversity of artistic and curatorial concepts, as well as a variety of topics affecting human individuals whereever they live on the globe. The project is using the technology of video and the medium of „moving images“ as a contemporary audio-visual language of art, addressed to an open minded audience who is eager to learn new ways of viewing following the new rules of „artvideo“, differently than the mass of static and moving images overwhelming people in daily life permanently like in cinema, television or Internet – giving the individual image or „frame“ back its individuality, and time another relevance and perception.

Curatorial statement
by Wilfried Agricola de Cologne
The motto of the 10th Cologne International Videoart Festival – “Total Art – Gesamtkunstwerk” is not only related to the type and contents of the audiovisual video works to be selected, but also to the meaning CologneOFF has as an artistic creation of its own.
It points to the fact that the festival activities are the creative output of the media artist Wilfried Agricola de Cologne, founding director und curator of CologneOFF whose artistic creative work in form of curating is manifesting itself in that special type of art work, the 10th festival edition of Cologne International Videoart Festival., respectively the totality of the project, entitled CologneOFF – Cologne International Videoart Festival, including 10 editions of an experimental and experimenting festival, and in this way, 10 years of an exciting media development. The festival as an art project and a cultural creation.
However, Agricola de Cologne is not placing himself and his creation in the foreground, but the particular complex audiovisual creations by the submitting fellow artists whose video works follow all the idea of the “Gesamtkunstwerk” using an individual audiovisual language, and in this way, the medium of digital video in all its technological complexity in order to confront the audience with multi-facetted contents, the manifestation of philosophical, political, cultural or artistic statements through a critical view on the PRESENT, sometimes ironically and with a sense of humour, but very serious und profound in artistic concern.
As a unity and totality, the selection to be presented in the context of 10th Athens International Videoart Festival would like to celebrate the diversity of contemporary artistic creations in times of the merging arts on occasion of the 10th anniversary of CologneOFF.

Short note
By Wilfried Agricola de Cologne
The video works selected for this retrospective compilation focus on some very relevant aspects of “art & moving images”, the experimenting with technology, forms, formats and contents, which is manifesting itself in a kind of hybrid category format, one might call “experimental documentary”. The compilation would like to present some exemplary works by artists from different countries and cultures, who make their personal perceptions, philosophical and artistic points of views the basis for a discussion with the viewer. Although as videos from their character linear, all of them include a strong interactive component by provoking the attention, concentration and activation of the viewer.

A meditation on longing, longday superimposes an element reminiscent of water onto a bustling city view as night falls. It floods this urban clamor with the nostalgic ocean of my native Brazil. Contra is a reflection on the fragility of contemporary man in his present environment, charting the loss of conscience that results in the moment of bonding our spirit to things material, the perceived reality of the senses. Use, transform, create, manipulate, destroy… actions that can form behaviors governed only by individual and immediate interests. Then we impose without respect, distracting ourselves from the negative consequences on our environment and ourselves.

Presenting the town and the public spaces though a model, the spectator doesn’t fit into the miniature of his familiar environment, but feels huge in comparison as an individual personality and social unity. This Art Work questions the emotional participation of the spectator in this visual transition of reality. There are scenes given as moments of a celebration by the nature and human society through the inexhaustible diversity of it creatures, and images showing the successive phases of movement of the unit, in the difficult and often painful attempt to participate in social destiny total.

Athens International Video Art Festival 2008 - 2007 - 2006
Athens International Video Art Festival 2008 (Greece) 11-12-13 April 2008
The experimental film tells the story of a homeless person, who lost its identity in all the traumatic experiences it was undergoing. Again, Agricola de Cologne uses the form of the allegorical representation for pointing to essential questions of human existence. All people are homeless in on or the other way, most however, suffer from it without being aware of it. The film is a mirror of our time which has lost its roots.
Athens Videoartfestival 2007 – Athens Greece 27, 28, 29 April 2007
Experimental film about the conflict of being friends and rivals.
Athens Videoart Festival 07/04-09/04 2006
The video tells the story of the human desire to be as close to truth as possible. But who ever will succeed while living a life dominated by the fast running time and endless searching?
If there is any paradise, then monks or people really resting within themselves find a paradise close to truth close to GOD. But it is only truth people are believing in. Is there absolute truth?
The video consists of three sections, a spiritual and a physical section and the acting level, the artist who is filming the scene, an intruder who become witness of a ritual of truth.
This basic video was filmed in 2003 at the Rila Monastery, the spiritual centre of Bulgaria.

In 2013, The Peruvian videoartist Mauricio Sanhueza participated for the 1st time in CologneOFF IX – 9th Cologne International Videoart Festival. Afterwards he missed no year, so that he submitted seven videos – which are remarkable in many concerns. They give an insight in the imagination of the artist – it is as if he is transforming “surrealism” into the language of the “moving images”, they give insight in the artists inner and outer world generating a kind of psychgram of the artist and at the same time the social conditions he is living in. This impression is underlined by the black & white images encouraging to colorize the viewer’s own imagination. Since each new video is demonstrating a similiar high level of imagination and filmic quality, it is now the proper time to honour the artist for both – the excellent works, as well as the collaboration since many years!

CologneOFF IV
The 4th edition of Cologne International Videoart Festival was released in November 2008, after Wilfried Agricola de Cologne returned from a travel to Venezuela. As a victim of the physical attack in Caracas, which was nearly killing him, he catched that very moment to take a photo shot of the both criminals escaping after the robbing attempt had failed. Hardly returned to Cologne, he took this photo of the escaping criminals as the poster for CologneOFF IV – which received also a new title – “Here We Are!”
Due to the quantity of included videos, NewMediaFest2020 prepared “The Best of CologneOFF IV” consisting of 6 streaming video programs.
The 4th edition is standing under the motto of “Here We Are”- dealing with the topic of “self-confidence

Netart
Solo feature of the month April 2020 – Calin Man
Those who take the time for looking for the correspondance between the biographies of Calin Man and Wilfried Agricola de Cologne will learn, that both were connected on different levels during the 1st years of the new millenium. While participating in numerous digital media events both were listed by the same festivals, but already 2001 after Wilfried Agricola de Cologne had openened JavaMuseum as the 1st virtual museum for virtual art, Calin Man was impressing him with his netart works. In this way, Calin Man was selected for participating in numerous online shows by JavaMuseum – in 2002, Calin Man received the JavaArtist of the Year Award, honouring the artistic excellence of his net based works – but in 2004, Can Man was curating for The RRF Project together with Stefan Tiron a selection of netart from Romania, enitled “Romanian Guns” launched on 5 March 2004 in version 2 at MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art Buchrest In 2011, Calin Man prepared for CologneOFF 2011 a selection from “Kinema Ikon” (see further ahead as a part of this feature) and in the same year, Arad Art Museum – curated by Calin Man was hosting “CologneOFF 2011 – videoart in a global context”. Without any doubt, Calin Man belongs to fundamental netartists.
The interactive artworks selected for the solo feature demonstrate an unusual artistic imagination combining technological relatedness and knowledge with a certain type of humour and surreal thinking, characteristics which make them timeless and worthwhile to be viewed and reviewed also in 2020. Kinema IKON
Kinema Ikon curated by Calin Man (2011)
detailed biography
kinema ikon – multimedia atelier was founded by George Sabau in 1970. The group underwent several periods of activity throughout the years. During the experimental film phase (1970 – 1989), 62 experimental films and 62 documentaries were produced; the experimental films were made in synchronicity with Western practices, and included: kinetic abstractions, animation, scratching on film, Surrealist exercises, non-figurative dynamic forms painted directly on film, [juxtapositions] of fragments of everyday material reality, etc. Within the context of the Communist regime, these works can be interpreted, almost exclusively, as forms of “samizdat.” In 1990, ki became a part of the Arad Museum Complex. A new generation of artists began producing mixed media and video installation work; after the fall of the Berlin Wall, kinema ikon was finally able to respond to an invitation to show a selection of experimental films at the Centre Pompidou/ Cinéma du Musée. Between 1994 and 2004, the group was one of the main promoters of digital art in Romania; interactive work on CD-ROM or net.art was made during this period, authored by individual members and as a group, shown in exhibitions and festivals around the world. In 2003, kinema ikon represented the Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennial. Since 2005, once with the emergence of a group of young artists around KF Arad, kinema ikon returned to the production of hybrid works. Since 2012 the group has had its dedicated gallery space at the Art Museum in Arad, where it has developed several projects: Wunderkammer (3 exhibitions, 2012 – 2016), kinema ikon: serial / 3 seasons / 40 episodes-installations (2013 –2016), internet of ki (2017), screens (2017), 49.*files (2019). Since 2014, kinema ikon has been the main organizer of MAFA – Media Art Festival Arad (now at its 6th edition). The group has edited the magazines Conversația (1990 – 1993) and Intermedia (1994 – 2011). Since 2012, ki publishes a yearly catalogue to accompany its main projects [and exhibitions], and edits the catalogue for MAFA. Calin Man is the group’s current coordinator.

short work description
The trail of the Cracked City leads across the globe; an unseen globalisation with its inevitable gravitational pull. Istanbul, Kathmandu, London, New York, Tokyo.
The work comprises two elements: a slideshow with commentary that randomly moves across locations and a “flickbook” that allows the user to move dynamically through pages.
Jihyun Ahn
JiHyun was born in Seoul in 1980, Korea and spent her childhood in Japan, where she was exposed to many unique animation films. She studied architecture and interior design at Yonsei University in Korea. During her school, spending more time on manipulating 2D and 3D graphic programs, she moved her interest forward to computer graphics and studied flash and video animation in School of Visual Arts in New York. Their Circumstances
2007, -Flash (with Actionscript) , Aftereffects, Photoshop, Finalcut pro
This is an experimental online animation, which introduces a new way to watch animation. It combines videos and flash with actionscripts. All movies are put together in flash and through the actionscripts programming code, people can see more than two angle shots simultaneously, select the chapters and the video segments and create their own storylines. Also there are dynamic animations in flash itself so the animations in videos and those in flash interact each other, crossing the frames. This frame means not only the literal frame object in my work but also the boundary between linear video work and nonlinear flash interactivity.
It tells a story about one day events which happen to one innocent family. There are five storylines, from four different characters’ viewpoints. Stories are seemingly random yet vitally connected with the tale of a set of incidents in one day. The animation starts with the end of the story and then the viewer can find the clue like fitting the pieces of a puzzle. It adds layers and events to the intriguing story until the final moment, where everything is finally made clear.
It reveals the dark side of human beings; crime, deceit, cruelty, negligence, love affair, cannibal and ghost. Because of one car accident, a family commits a crime against human morality. But no one blames them because they have their own circumstances.

Entre Ville
2006, HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, Quicktime, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro
Entre Ville is a web art poem about my back alleyway. I work at home. My studio window opens into a jumbled intimacy of back balconies, yards and alleyways. Daily my dog and I walk through this interior city sniffing out stories. Poetry is not hard to find between the long lines of peeling-paint fences plastered with notices, spray painted with bright abstractions and draped with trailing vines. Entre Ville is presented in the vernacular of my neighbourhood, where cooking smells, noisy neighbours and laundry lines criss-cross the alleyway one sentence at a time. Entre Ville is based on my poem, “Saint-Urbain Street Heat” which was first published in the UK online literary journal NthPosition.com, and in now archived in The British Library’s permanent collection in association with the UK Web Archiving Consortium. The web iteration of Entre Ville was commissioned by the OBORO New Media Lab on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Conseil des arts de Montreal. It launched at the Musee des beaux-arts de Montreal, April 27, 2006 and has since been presented at MiT5, a conference at MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, and included in the Rhizome ArtBase at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY, USA, and the Web Biennial 2007 at the Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum, Turkey.

Gaza Airport
year of production: 2008, used technology (software etc): HTML language, required plug-ins: Non
The Gaza International Airport art project I carried out in 2008 is again a realization of my wish to express people’s frustration about their stolen right of free movement. The idea stems from the strong wish of an immigrant Palestinian of having his family to attend his wedding in Oslo; something which has been impossible to happen due to the political realities which impose travel ban on
Palestinians. The art project is an internet website coping with modern technology reaching people worldwide and addressing them by today’s language of online ticket order/purchase. The twin
project ‘Palestine Airways Limited’ realized in an art installation in the Open Academy 2008 was to promote and market the total -project through a real setup of travel agency equipped with posters
and information sheets about the real original historical Gaza Airport of 1937. Visitors of the exhibition could buy the actual invalid tickets. The art project as a whole is a protest in a peaceful ironic manner against the man-made doom of Palestinians who have to struggle for the very basic means of living. By inviting people to travel by “Palestine Airways Limited” and landing in the “Gaza Airport” the artist is calling on people to learn the paradox, and open their eyes on a human fair issue in a modernized world.
Curt Cloninger
Curt Cloninger is an artist, writer, and designer living in western North Carolina, US. His art undermines language as a system of meaning in order to reveal it as an embodied force in the world. His materials are spoken words, sounds, hand-written words, lines, objects coupled with words, objects as words, light, and time. He orchestrate these materials using video, software, performances, installations, and networks.

Stand By Your Guns
by Jillian Mcdonald

Stand By Your Guns confronts us with the ubiquity of guns and how violent simulations translate into real life shootings. It is an absurdist piece that both glorifies the weapon and masquerades as an entertainment arcade. [Needs Flash 6.0+ and Speakers/Headphones]

curator’s biography
Curatorial Statement
Vast expanse often leads to bouts of topographical uncertainty: where and how does a sense of coherence, or even incoherence, form in a characteristic Western experience that is typically and all that much more sharply divided between the metropolis and our othered sense of nature? Predominantly products of urban environments, Canadian artists are perhaps particularily attenuated to the historical, progammatic violence that constructs the nation-state. It is only by denying First Nations people entitlement and by deploying a fixed notion of property that Canada enforces its territory and established its governance. These memories of topography are coursed with violence, and are to be found echoing, as traces and tactics, through sound recordings, manipulations and sonic rearticulations that consider a vast region of topics but always retain the grit and dust, the violence, that forms the struggles of power over the topos.
