The Month December is starting traditionally on 1 December with the World AIDS Day in order to keep vivid not only the memory of the since decade millions people killing pandemic, but also their victims and the perspectives for fighting the pandemic. In 2020, The 7 Memorials for Humanity release The New AIDS Memorial as the main activity of NMF2020 – based on the AIDS Memorial – once launched in 2001, thus 19 years ago, it was after the 9/11 Memorial, the 2nd memorial site, A Virtual Memorial was publishing online – focussed on a less attended aspect – commemorating the artists who died od AIDS. Based on numerous linked resources and created in FLASH, the memorial project became during the years out of date, and the memorial project in the truncated state had to be removed from the net. Now part of The 7 Memorial for Humanity, the time was mature to launch – The New AIDS Memorial – in the framework of NMF2020, using the still existing artists contributions from the former AIDS Memorial as a basis and extend it through a collection of videos, entitled “LGBT – Gender Identity” – taking into account that original HIV was spreading among the LGBT community before is was conquering the rest of the society particularly in the populations in South America, Asia and Africa.
While December located at the end of the year is always representing the occasion to take a retrospective view on the past 12 months, in the case of NMF2020, the past months since its launch in December 2019 had been a retrospective already – a retrospective of the past 20 years, and now the end of the year is starting incorporating some highlights happening during the month December it seems to be more relevant to take a view, what might happen afterwards – after 31 December 2020.
Once, NewMediaFest2020 was launched as a project simply celebrating the 20th anniversary of the start of a new era on 1. January 2000, when Wilfried Agricola de Cologne was (re)born, a big thanks to all people (artists, curators etc) and instances (festivals, museums, galleries etc) collaborating with Wilfried during the past 20 years, and – close to his activities afterwards, so actually NMF2020 was planned as a final point.
Especially, the idea to publish each day of a week, a month and the year 2020 referring to the respective dates of historical events and incidents during the past 20 years, Wilfried became aware of many new perceptions, one of them was – he recognized the potential to start new activities rising from this 20 years developing pool of activities, and another one was, that he must not allow commercial companies to take influence on his life as an artist like ADOBE was taking when the company was killing the popular technology of Shockwave and FLASH, and at the end of 2020 the works of thousands of creative people will vaanish from the net without any trace. So, these were some of the motivations to restart becoming creative and forming something new out of the past 20 years.
Especially the collaboration with Torrance Art Museum (July – September 2020) had a particular inspiring effect, because Wilfried was requested to create a temporary platform for the online screenings due to the Corona crisis. Generally can be said, that for Wilfried the Corona pandemic was no crisis, because he continued his online/offline activities like during the past 20 years before, but due to the CORONA restrictions suddenly the online activities in the field of art got a completely new relevance. People who previously refused condemning any onlime activity suddenly recognized these activities as a way to survive, at all – and suddenly an unusual competition between all these new art related activities was starting, however not in the sense of networking, but by tranferring the former physical activities to the net, which however did not make much sense – it is quite useless when thousands of activities start at the same day at the same time 8.p.m, like they periously did in physical space, there is and was no coordination, but rather a pure chaos, and what was thought to be a chance was killing the chances, because the people did not take into account that the Internet had its own rules. So, one even might speak of a war of cultural activities blocking each other.
But, as it was said, creating for the TAM collaboration a new online platform for Wilfried’s current activities, he did not stop the plaform after the collaboration was finished, but recognized the chance to use ALPHABET – thats the name of this cinema platform – for the screening activities of NewMediaFest 2020 – and continue them after 31 December 2020.
Wilfried’s ideas are to finalize the activities of the past 20 years, and use the result, eg NewMediaFest2020 and its 365 Days structure as a new body for The New Museum of Networked Art and install the screening platform in 2021 as a new art centre for moving images, sonic and interactive art. While during 2020 all users had free and unrestricted access to all the hundreds of publised screening programs, in future the museum exhibitions will be not longer available completely unrestricted, the entrance will remain free, of course no entry fee is required, but like in a conventional museum, the user has to enter the entrance area – which means for the online user – for entering the art exhibition the users have to use a password.
ALPHABET will host all exhibitions in future, the already existing sites of The New Museum of Networked Art containing inforamtions and documentation will be linked with the exhibtion programs on ALPHABET as the central exhibition platform, in this way, especially the video sources can be accessed only via a password.
Actually, Wilfried had been proud to make his artistic and curatorial creations available to online users without any restrictions, but the new cultural context to be released in 2021 and the general conditions have changed – requires restrictions for different reasons, also in this concern, that otherwise the traffic on the hosting server is blasting all dimensions. The screening on ALPHABET are attracting so many users that the mark of 100 Terrabyte during the Month October has passsed.
Besides The New AIDS Memorial and its new film collection, the December edition of NMF2020 is continuing The screening of the Gandhi PPNRCD exhibition on ALPHABET featuring 2 new works by Dawn Westlake and Danielle Imara/Yolanta Brener, the features of extension of the CORONA Film Collection, and further above all, the Month December has 3 featured Videoiartists – Isabel Perez Del Pulgar (Spain)- Maria Korporal (Netherland) – Susanne Wiegner (Germany), further of relevance is the relaunch of CologneOFF X – 10th CologneOFF International Videoart Festival and in the section “netart” an exhibtion at MAXXI Rome and a curated contrinution by Elena Giulia Rossi (Rome) are featured until 31 December 2020, when NewMediaFest2020 will be closed after an exciting and challenging retrospective. At this stage, thanks again to coll collaborators which made this unusual retrospective “Thanksgiving” only possible!

One of the new achievements of The New Museum of Networked Art – is representing the new darkroom/cinema space, name ALPHABET – due to the 26 incorporated cinemas each one with an individual programming. Serving until 31 December 2020 as a screening platform for NewMediaFest2020, The screenings on ALPHABET to be announced on The 365 Days Diary are complementing the attractive November features!

The New Aids Memorial

The New AIDS Memorial

is consisting of several components – the reconstruction of the memorial released on 1 December 2001 and its extension through a new film collection, entitled: “LGBT – Gender Identity Film Collection.

The Memorial site – is a very personal tribute to the victims of AIDS, Agricola de Cologne was initiating on occasion of 1 December 2001 (Unesco World AIDS Day). It is dedicated to all friends and relatives who died of AIDS, and beyond that specifically all artists who died of AIDS, and generally to all people on Earth being HIV infected, suffering of AIDS and died of AIDS.

Agricola de Cologne grew up as a part of the generation who was living for the first time in history in sexual freedom. Most of the student fellows in Munich and Amsterdam (1971-1978) were gay or lesbian, but in 2001 Agricola de Cologne stated for the first time – and was tremendously shocked, that none of these people was still living but died of AIDS meanwhile, and as one of only a few he had survived. He was the survivor of a lost generation.

At first, AIDS was widely underestimated, than the shock of being infected was tremendous, but when many people finally realized the deadly desease wasn’t that deadly, at all, because via a special medical treatment the outbreak of the desease could be put off, they reacted defiantly, and continued their former life, in any case all of the affected could not prevent the outbreak and died.

Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Following initial infection, a person may not notice any symptoms or may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness.Typically, this is followed by a prolonged period with no symptoms. As the infection progresses, it interferes more with the immune system, increasing the risk of developing common infections such as tuberculosis, as well as other opportunistic infections, and tumors that rarely affect people who have uncompromised immune systems. These late symptoms of infection are referred to as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).[5] This stage is often also associated with unintended weight loss.

HIV is spread primarily by unprotected sex (including anal and oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, such as saliva and tears, do not transmit HIV. Methods of prevention include safe sex, needle exchange programs, treating those who are infected, pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, and male circumcision. Disease in a baby can often be prevented by giving both the mother and child antiretroviral medication.[4] There is no cure or vaccine; however, antiretroviral treatment can slow the course of the disease and may lead to a near-normal life expectancy. Treatment is recommended as soon as the diagnosis is made.[14] Without treatment, the average survival time after infection is 11 years.

AIDS was first clinically reported on June 5, 1981, with five cases in the United States. The initial cases were a cluster of injecting drug users and homosexual men with no known cause of impaired immunity who showed symptoms of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), a rare opportunistic infection that was known to occur in people with very compromised immune systems.[223] Soon thereafter, an unexpected number of homosexual men developed a previously rare skin cancer called Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS). Many more cases of PCP and KS emerged, alerting U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a CDC task force was formed to monitor the outbreak.

In the early days, the CDC did not have an official name for the disease, often referring to it by way of the diseases that were associated with it, for example, lymphadenopathy, the disease after which the discoverers of HIV originally named the virus. They also used Kaposi’s sarcoma and opportunistic infections, the name by which a task force had been set up in 1981. At one point, the CDC coined the phrase “the 4H disease”, since the syndrome seemed to affect heroin users, homosexuals, hemophiliacs, and Haitians. In the general press, the term “GRID”, which stood for gay-related immune deficiency, had been coined. However, after determining that AIDS was not isolated to the gay community, it was realized that the term GRID was misleading and the term AIDS was introduced at a meeting in July 1982. By September 1982 the CDC started referring to the disease as AIDS.

AIDS Memorial 2001

The 2001 Memorial is representing a reconstruction of the orinially in Flash created memorial – which however is no longer accessable due to the obsolete technology. Some of the linked contributions are based on dead links, and heve been removed therefore.

Gandhi! – PPNRCD
PPNRCD – stands for “Peaceful Protest – Nonviolent Resistance – Civil Disobedience”

In short, these three methods are representing the essence of Mahatma Gandhi’s fight for the independence of India from the British Empire (15 August 1947).
During the global conflicts, at his time this was most unusual to propagate nonviolence instead of violence and war which was more popular in the uprising nationalism worldwide.
But Gandhi was successful, however, he was paying a very high price – he was assassinated like his likeminded follower Martin Luther King, while propagating nonviolence and, Nelson Mandela whose nonviolence finally succeeded only after he was sitting for decades in prison.

More than 150 years ago – on 2 October 1869, Mahatma Gandhi was born, he was assassinated on 10 January 1948.

What can Gandhi’s methods tell us today?
They haven’t lost anything of their explosive force, think of the current movements of climate change, social equality etc, when “war” and enforcing conflicts are again an option. There is no politician on Earth who does not speak of war currently!

While Gandhi’s achievements are representing the historical roots for later nonviolent political and social movements, the project would like to spotlight incidents taking place after Gandhi’s death driven by the spirit of non-violence and humanity, think of Martin Luther King’s equal rights movement, the peaceful revolution of the German Re-unification or the liberation from the Apartheit in South Africa, for instance, or current movements of climate change, or all the daily situations when people overcome conflicts via nonviolence.

The Birla Academy of Art & Culture Kolkata is planning between 16 October – 22 November 2020– an exhibition on occasion of the 151st anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Invited to prepare a screening program of videos for the anniversary exhibition dealing with Gandhi’s maxims in a narrow or wider sense, Wilfried Agricola de Cologne initiated at The Wake Up! Memorial a new commemorative context, based on the new film collection, entitled; Gandhi – PPNRCD – Peaceful Protest – Nonviolent Resistance – Civic Disobedience, consisting of 30 artvideos, and selected 15 videos as a part of the exhibition context.

This screening program is realized in collaboration between The Birla Academy of Art and Culture Kolkata, Culture Monks India, The Best of Kolkata Campus and The Wake Up! Memorial, A Virtual Memorial Foundation, The New Museum of Networked Art and NewMediaFest2020 complemented and accompanied by the screening of the complete film collection @ ALPHABET at The New Museum of Networked Art online between 15 October and 31 December 2020 (end of NewMediaFest2020).

Isabel Pérez del Pulgar

Born in Granada (Spain) with residence in France since 2015. Degree in Geography and Stories with the specialty of Art by the University of Granada. In the mid-2000s she adopted as a way of creating and expressing the video. Video as an experimentation vehicle, where the movement is combined, sound and pictorial vision. At the same time, performance is acquiring a greater presence as a means of work. The body like protagonist element and narrative driver. Architecture of stressed physicality of space – time.

Maria Korporal

Maria Korporal was born 1962 in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands. She studied graphics and painting at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts in Breda. During her studies she began working with photography and she graduated with, among other things, a video installation. After her studies, in 1986, she moved to Rome, Italy, where she lived until 2013. Since 2014 she has lived and worked in Berlin.
The artistic production of Maria Korporal includes video art, installations, interactive art and performances. Besides she is active as web- and graphic designer.

Susanne Wiegner studied architecture at the Academy of fine Arts in Munich and at Pratt Institute in New York City. She works as an architect and 3D-artist in Munich, Germany. In addition to projects in real space, for several years she has been creating 3D computer animations dealing with literature and with virtual space.

The motto of the 10
th Cologne International Videoart Festival – “Total Art – Gesamtkunstwerk” is not only related to the type and contents of the audiovisual video works to be selected, but also to the meaning CologneOFF has as an artistic creation of its own.
It points to the fact that the festival activities are the creative output of the media artist Wilfried Agricola de Cologne, founding director und curator of CologneOFF whose artistic creative work in form of curating is manifesting itself in that special type of art work, the 10th festival edition of Cologne International Videoart Festival., respectively the totality of the project, entitled CologneOFF – Cologne International Videoart Festival, including 10 editions of an experimental and experimenting festival, and in this way, 10 years of an exciting media development. The festival as an art project and a cultural creation.
However, Agricola de Cologne is not placing himself and his creation in the foreground, but the particular complex audiovisual creations by the submitting fellow artists whose video works follow all the idea of the “Gesamtkunstwerk” using an individual audiovisual language, and in this way, the medium of digital video in all its technological complexity in order to confront the audience with multi-facetted contents, the manifestation of philosophical, political, cultural or artistic statements through a critical view on the PRESENT, sometimes ironically and with a sense of humour, but very serious und profound in artistic concern.
The programs follow each one a concept of its own alienating usual perceptions in visual and philosophical terms. They reflect art transporting memory from the Past, the identity of the artist under continuously changing conditions, the environment people are living referring to Present and Future.
By taking a look on the reality they recognize the world is not like it looks like, a game between the real and surreal, between the subjective and the objective, polarizations and contradictions within themselves, exciting and disturbing.
CologneOFF X is the10th festival edition in sequence. In the time of the rapid development of everything is that kind of continuation representing an enormous value, especially considering that CologneOFF started in 2005, its foundation from point zero, and established among the relevant videoart festivals on the globe within quite a short time despite or due to the concept of a new type of nomadic festival which is taking place all over the year, seven days a week and 24 hour ours a day, in an exchange between virtual & physical space via the Internet & festival events all over the world with the best collaboration partners.

(Rome, 1971)

Elena Giulia Rossi works and lives in Rome where she has been collaborating with MAXXI – museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo since 2002.

In 1999 she achieved her degree at the University of Rome La Sapienza with a major in History of Contemporary Art. In 2002 she graduated from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago with a Master of Arts in Arts Administration. She collaborated with P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (summer 2001), and at The Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago (spring 2002).

In 2003 she published in Italian Archeonet. Viaggio nella storia della net/web art e suo ingresso negli spazi dei musei tradizionali (Lalli Editore, Siena). Archeonet was revised by contemporary art magazines such as “Arte e Critica” (n. 35/36, ottobre – dicembre 2003, p.89); “Next Exit” (n. 13, december 2003, p.50) and the online magazine “Neural.it” specialized in new media (19 aprile 2005). In 2005 she was Editor of Eduardo Kac, Move 36 (Filigranes Editions, Parigi 2005).
She was invited to be part of the Jury for the Award Netizens II (Galleria Sala 1, Rome 2004), and for the award Premio di Arte Digitale (DARC – Direzione generale per l’Arte e l’Architettura Contemporanee and Fondazione Rosselli, Rome 2005).

She was invited to give lectures an seminars at the University of Siena in the Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia e Storia dell’Arte (Siena, 2003-2004-2005), at the Polish Institute (Rome, 2006), at the International conference “Artech Media” (Madrid, 2007).

In 2006 she curated Food in Bytes within Time in Jazz Festival (Berchidda, Sardegna) and She Devils (Studio Stefania Miscetti, Roma).

Since 2005 she has been curating a section dedicated to net/web art at MAXXI – Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo in Rome. She regularly writes for the on-line edition of the Italian newspaper “L’Unità”.
