5 January 2009

Today, on 5 January 2009, VideoChannel released the first part of the online show “Found Footage” focussed on a specific category of digital video using found footage for the creation of moving images.

Found footage is following the principle of the “collage”, like the German artist “Kurt Schwitters” was using it for the 1st time in the early 20th century. Wilfried, who founded VideoChannel on occasion of BEAP – Biennale of Electronic Art Perth (Australia) in 2004, is acting also in the given case as the curator.

As a video artist himself, Wilfried knows about the creative potential using found footage standing alone or in combination with the original footage the artist was shooting.
Using found footage is alienating reality – transferring the reality of the already existing into a new fictive reality.

The found footage artists are often using royalty free footage as it film footage archives (for instance – The Prelinger Archives) are offering for free use, the same is good also for “found sound”, when artists place already existing sound or music into a new artistic context (Free Sound Archives, for instance).

Mostly this footage has a low image resolution, and therefore playing with different resolutions in the same movie is representing an interesting artistic challenge through another level of alienation.

As a curator, Wilfried is interested in presenting a diversity of artistic concepts to the audience, in terms of “Found Footage”, he would like to demonstrate examples of its creative potential.
The selected videos in video SD format 640×480 – orginate from the years 2000-2009.
