Corona

The 1st Corona Festival!

Corona –
It is a virus that is changing the world! But Corona isn’t the plague, killing all infected people. It is rather the warning to mankind to be very careful and becoming aware that the capitalism of the globalisation was a completely wrong development. Corona is so dangerous because the infection, as such, cannot not be controlled, if people continue their current way of living, everybody is potentially affected.

That’s a basic difference to HIV. When HIV was spreading all over the world – so-called only a few risk groups were affected, infecting in the beginning only homosexuels, later also hetero risk groups in the Western countries, whole generations of men and women, who were not able to deal properly with the sexual freedom were dying and vanished. But then AIDS became a desease of the poor countries in Africa , ASIA and South America, but who cared, that millions of people were dying of Aids and still do, as a mere exotic phenomenon this is not worthwhile to be a headline in the daily news- it is usual. And for that, nobody need to go under quarantine!

I know how it is to be under quarantine. I belong to that AIDS generation which was sexually active in the 70ties, 80ties and 90ties of the past century, each sexual partner was a potential infection risk, and in my case I can say, most of the sexual partners did not care, not for themselves and not for my person.. Nearly all my intimate relations and friends died of AIDS, and lovers turned out to be murderers. It was the only way to survive to go under a self-chosen quarantine – no sex.

I was choosing my own quarantine, as well, when I fell into the coma 1998, and I was under quarantine after I woke up seven months later, it took years to re-establish myself, and I only survived because I was able to start a new life sitting at home in quarantine, separated from the rest of the world. My entire artistic and curatorial work is based on that “isolation” and eliminating that isolation. For me that kind of life was “normal”. Only later it “normalized” from the perspective of other people through extending social contacts.

But after I had been attacked in 2008 and 2009 and set in an artificial coma, my life was again under quarantine, which had the meaning to re-activate the self-healing powers, and afterwards the quarantine continued for a while, before in 2017 I had the heavy accident which had again such desastrous effects similiar to quarantine, and after another “normalization”, in September 2019 I got a tetanus infection due to the incredible irresposibility of hospital doctors on Malta, and being back still alive in Cologne, I was advised to go under a self-chosen quarantine in order to protect myself.

So, what can Corona mean to me, at all? Continue my life as it was – under a permanent quarantine. In this way, the Corona crisis has no influence on my life and professional work.
I am sure, I will not become infected – and if I should do by coincidence, I am sure my immunity system is remaining as strong as it has been during all the years.

Yes, NewMediaFest2020 is the 1st Corona Festival – in solidarity and social responsibility!

And, by the way, most artists need such a self-chosen isolation for being creative, so they should actually be predestined to overcome such a crisis in society at best.
