Today is the 2nd day of the screenings @ Estonian Academy of Arts – the 4th venue of CologneOFF2011_Baltic Sea PDF catalogue CologneOFF 2011 Baltic Sea CologneOFF 2011 – Baltic Sea. Invited by Raivo Kelomees, head of the new media department of the Estonian art academy and former netartist collaborating with Wilfried already since 2001, Wilfried is spending some days in Tallinn, his first travel to Estonia. As a Post-Sovjet country, Estonia is walking new paths in democracy by organising the daily life digitally. This is possible because Estonia is a very small country with a very small population.
The date of the screenings are not very fortunate because on 1 June usually the academic holidays are starting or it is the phase of the last days of final examn.
Estonia is really already a very Nordic country, close connected to Finland through history and language. The old historical centre of Tallinn reminds of the middle ages and close to the city centre there are some beautiful gardens and palaces from the 18th century. While walking through the old town, one would not get the idea that Estonia might be such a progressive country. But Wilfried is not sure, whether the Estonians are different in dealing with audio-visual art than other places he was visiting before, because strangely enough on one hand video, respectively moving images are dominating the daily visual world, but in terms of art the medium “video” is popular only for artists, but not the audience!!??
