namaTRE.ba project
www.namaTRE.ba
Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina
to be featured on VideoChannel
namaTRE.ba project is established in Trebinje 2006. First part of this project, exhibition was screened at Fine Arts Academy in Trebinje on march 2007. This project is independent platform for contemporary art and its focusing on video//contemporary shortfilm// performance// photography and new media arts.
The name of the project “namaTRE.ba” which means “we need” is actually a pun or a wordplay. The very idea and the name of the project “we need in TREbinje” speaks volumes about how much we need an event of this kind. Year 2007 namaTRE.ba I project was presented in Pilsen, Czech Republic at Mazhausen Pilsen Gallery. namaTRE.ba 2 is a video project which presents
video, film and performance as well as experimental-collage mix new media works dealing with the eternal civillisation issues and problems, only this time within the given circumstances of contemporary social paradigms.
The video project namaTRE.ba does not aim to become a large-scale international exhibition of significance, but to present annually
the works of artists from the region and from the territories of the former Yugoslavia, as well as from the European and a wider global context which deal with the exploration of the art media and the field where this media exists.
Year 2007 first namaTRE.ba 1 project identified and set boundaries on the scope and possibilities within the local context, the town of Trebinje, and last year second namaTRE.ba project is set to become an
international and a traditional video festival.
namaTRE.ba 2 has a thematic character, light motif is the human body. Most of the selected works deal with the problem of the human body and the mutual relations between bodies and their perception/reception. One group of works deals with this issue explicitly whereas another group treats the issue indirectly. The body as organism, the body as figure, the body as discourse, can be interpreted as an organic system, as an organ or the body of a whole which has or does not have a certain function, as a phantom limb, as an expression or reflection of a specific spiritual state of an individual / collectiveness. Last year, short selection, of namaTRE.ba II project was presented in Orebro, Sweden at Konsthall Orebro Gallery. This year 2009 upcoming namaTRE.ba 3 project will be presented in June in Cologne, Germany, as a part of a Video Channel.
The history of video art begins at the exact moment when televisions are placed in sets as sculptor installations in a diapason ranging from a video sculpture to video installations, where in a way, video art in high style becomes a mainstream manifestation in museums and art galleries in the world. Through the history of video art numerous artists dedicated their work to experimental research and development of an aesthetic language which was built on the fact that the electronic medium has its own specific
characteristics, often avoiding the form of narrative and journalistic conventions which, on the other hand, aim to offer a specific linear linguistic comprehension of the moving image.
According to the poetics of the new media, a piece of work is read into and comprehended as a mutually dependent arrangement of a recipient’s body and the very work of art. According to the recent definitions of the poetics of the new media, a work of art has be come a flux. Flux as a flow of energy. The flow of energy or the intensity that a piece of work has on the body and vice versa. Flux between the body and the piece of work as a complex relation between situations, events, relations and flows in which various process esare involved, the bearers of the process as the systems of artificial and organic reactions or reflections.
In the meantime, mankind has become immune to the moving images of pain, suffer ing, degradation and brutality since it is being exposed to them via information canals of contemporary society. It has become too boring. It has been realized that the attention span, the possibility for visual perception, is progressively declining and the appetites for
new visual sensations are increasing exponentially. The possibilities for raising the levels of knowledge and perception as well as concentration are constantly experiencing erosion by fluxes of interference signals. Equalizing the importance of all images on the air creates a state of visual entropy where everything is in movement, in fluctuation, and theim
ages in rapid shifts lose or gain in their importance and meaning. What dominates is the ene rgetic pulsing of all visual media within which it is very difficult or hardly possible for video art to find a firm base from which or opposite which it stems, because in this reality it is all about appearances and phantasms.
Consequently, the new media art and digital art present visual challenges for the classical notion of film or a piece of video work. Delez and Gatari offered an image of anoccurrence involved in a work of a machine. What they offered is the theorization of the impact of the work itself opposite what the work can offer. They also offered a shift in the interpretation of the meaning: a harsh exposure of the body to the impact, instead of an intellectual coding and theoretical decoding of public, intimate, artistic or any other meanings.

biography http://and.nmartproject.net/?p=528
Title of work: Via Crisis
Year: 2007
Duration: 2’ 49”
Concept, cam and editing: Silvio De Gracia
Synopsis:
From a simple pun with the Christian VIA CRUXIS, the video builds a reflection about the loss of faith and about an opposition between light and darkness within the religious field. A Christ who shifts ambiguously between life and lifelessness and who goes from semi-darkness to the abyss, ends up being buried, this referring to the definite closing down of a religion which is connected with intolerance and violence.

Valeri Chakalo, Georgi Krastev, Victor Petkov, Cvetan Krastev, Venelin Shurelov
was born in 1986 in Varna, Bulgaria. He studied Psychology at the Varna Free University. In 2012 graduated at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. Participant in Sarajevo Talent Campus 2013, Locarno Summer Academy 2011 (64th Locarno Film Festival), Berlinale Talent Campus 2011, Summer Media Studio 2009. Part from the International Jury of Avanca Film Festival 2013 in Portugal. Now he works as freelance filmmaker. His artistic practice focuses on filmmaking, video art, photography and media art. As an artist, he has presented his works in several exhibitions and festivals in Bulgaria and abroad. Also, he is a co-founder, director of The Quarantine Film Festival. The name of the region “The Quarantine” comes from the past when the sailors from commercial ships entering the harbor with suspicion of some kind of disease were taken ashore at the beach for the quarantine period of 40 days. In case they showed no signs of illness, they were allowed access to town. At present, the young artists who still have not found their realization are in the status of a “Quarantine” – isolated by the film makers’ circles. In analogy to the history of the location, we decided to organize a film festival for short films called “The Quarantine” for young authors (age 16 – 35 years) in the open air – straight on the beach, and to popularize their activity among the professional filmmaking circles.

Title of work
“Nanopiezas“
I suggest a journey across different sound worlds through a series of short works. Microcosmos that refer to sonorities belonging to childhood losed with the pass of time. Environments wich have been transformed when we grow up and audio views that suffer continuous and imperceptible changes. There are basic sound objects but each fragment contains small details that suggest something distant and many times forgotten.

“The Cathedral Silences, background #1”
This artwork connect the basic elements of clasicism: water, fire, earth and air with the last technolgy within reach of man: ultraviolet lights, lasers, sensors, realtime modified sounds, etc. Is the man inside the loop of time hanging around a magic place. (…) This art piece of light and sound represents materially a Gothic Cathedral element and conceptually the thought, the quiet shouts, the experiences, demands, requests, and people’s prayers who has been stepping the cathedrals during centuries. Title of work
1 String Quartet nº 1 “Dies Irae – Lento”
2 String Quartet nº 1 “Dies Irae – Allegro”
All along the history, it doesn’t matter the reason, to invoke the divine anger (“Dies Irae”) was a perfect excuse for violent acts, like start a war or to kill somebody. This string quartet was composed in 1998 and take his name “Dies Irae” by the use of diverse fragments from the original medieval chant. His two contrasted movements (slow-quick) show the main thematic material by a progressive stretching toward a random and climatic zone and his later digression, alternately between ostinatos and sections who contradicts his rithmic regularity. This composition, played by the Cuarteto Contemporáneo of Las Palmas, was published on the record “La creación musical en Canarias”, vol nº 11.

Juan Antonio Lleó
artist biography
Title of work
“Weyujoi 5”
With that composition I try to recreate a idyllical place, away from preocupations, where you can meditate quietly about your troubles, your memories and discover the futility of violent attitudes. I think it is better to think first, and then to act consecuently. As human beings we have a main difference with the animals, we can control our instincts and decide if it is worth to fight or use the violence to solve a situation, instead to follow our very powerfull animal side as the first option. “Weyujoi” is the phonetic spanish translation from the first verse of a poem from the classic chinesse poet Li-Po, called “Evasion” who speaks about how the poet loves the peace of the mountains and prefer the “heavenly” life instead of the daily one. The recording of this verse of the poem, readed by the chinesse woman Huan Hue, is the only material used in the composition. The rest of the sounds are generated from this, using several digital audio processing technics, like granular synthesis, noise reduction, time stretching, reverb and filters. All this materials are mixed on a digital multitrack sequencer.

Seven Ways for Saying Internet with Net Art
Elena Giulia Rossi
Since its inception, net art has always been referring to its own medium. The seven works selected, created in different times, address different facets of the nature of Internet, from the social perception of the self and of the body in relation to technology, to the potential impact that this medium can have on society, mostly when art is concerned. The relationship between nature art and representation of the self with the flow of information is synthesized in the hybrid portrait of Deus Fleurs by the French artist Reynald Drouhin.
Generative processes as art are the core of C.J. Yeh’s Equal where personal data generate modernist-like paintings. Sound and space in relation to dynamics and energy are the subject of Santiago Ortiz’s Sound and Energy where Internet is treated as a canvas for dynamic and interactive sketches.
Molleindustria’s works, a collective engaged in the creation of original games aimed to rise political concerns are excellent examples of how games, and Internet as a vehicle to foster them, can ease issues otherwise difficult to face. Mc Donald’s Videogame is a courageous critique of the McDonald’s brand and of the functioning of its corporation, at the origin of remarkable ecological damages. It is through the game that Juliet Davis explores in Pieces of Herself feminine embodiment and its relation to real and virtual space. A game is also involved in Iconoclast Game by Lorenzo Pizzanelli: through irony and play the author gives a critical view of the power of images and of the museums that make them sacred.
F.R.U.I.T., engaged in the shaping of an on-line community to encourage cultivation within urban areas, is a project where the network activity is art. It makes clear that net art is “action” and it is closer to performing than any other art practice.

Virgil Widrich, Daniel & Matthias Hafner, elisabeth Kramer, Jatherina Swoboda, Evelyn Kreinecker, Eginhartz Kanter
creates media artworks, photos, sculptures and performances. By questioning the concept of movement, Wegerer tries to grasp language. Transformed into art, language becomes an ornament. At that moment, lots of ambiguities and indistinctness’s, which are inherent to the phenomenon, come to the surface.
His media artworks focus on the inability of communication which is used to visualize reality. The attempt of dialogue, the dissonance between form and content and the dysfunctions of language will be concentrated.
In short, the lacks of clear references are key elements in the work. By investigating language on a meta-level, he plays with the idea of the mortality of an artwork confronted with the power of a transitory appearance, which is, by being restricted in time, much more intense. Roland is also founder and director of the danubeVIDEOARTfestival and VOS|Roland Wegerer

F.I.M. (Free improvised music cologne), soundso, Ensemble All-Tag, Doppelpluss
“KlangDrang 2005 – A Festival for Incredible Music”
In this case “Incredible Music” means the spheres of New Music, experimental and improvised music, Performance Art and New Media. This festival was brought into being 2002 as a hommage for the cologne citizen center Alte Feuerwache which enables the presentation of extraordinary music since more than 25 years. This year KlangDrang presented 4 ensembles from which you can hear each 3 cuttings of an each 45 minute performance.
F.I.M. (Free improvised music cologne)
Nobert Zajac (voc), Matthias Kaiser (violin), Frank Bersziek (sax, basscl), Michael Haverkamp (sax, perc), Karl Kruetzmann (fl, tr, piano), Joerg Koenig (git), Axel Hoeptner (piano), Frank Homburg (sax), Wolfgang Simmons (git). F.I.M. is an open collaboration between musicians, who let themselves in for the risk of a music without arrangements. If there are agreements, than just in view of the actual cast. The music is free improvised on stage. As a construct of the moment was never heard so, nor it will ever reproduced live exactly in that way. The stile flows between archaic sound, noise art, Free Jazz and New Music and so is based on the exitement of the moment.
soundso
Bettina Wenzel, Brigitte Kuepper, Norbert Zajac, Peter Wolf (all vocal) Vocal communication as an experiment – 4 singers test the possibilities of the vocal cords. Croaking, spitting and slurping a part of the repertoire of this vocal ensemble just as singing in extremly high registers and soundfull depth or the spontaneous inventions of cacophonic languages and onomatopoeic escapades. The personalities of the 4 improvisers meet, according to demand, harmonical, contrarily or meshed and meanwhile count on enthusiasm and the intuitive work with vocal sound.
Ensemble All-Tag
Frank Bersziek (sax, bcl), Konrad Doeppert (analogsynth, objects), Matthias Kaiser (violin), Joerg Koenig (git). This quartett came from a combination of musicians, which got random selected while the KlangDrang festival in 2004.. Free improvised pieces are the basic of the musical collaboration. Experiences with the european free improvised music, the electroaccoustical art, the noise experiments of the eighties and in their origin outer musical elements come together while playing free. Results are subtle coded sound sceneries, where the audience finds space for free association.
Doppelpluss
Brigitte Kuepper (voc/tb/div), Wolfgang Simons (git/sax/div), Konrad Doeppert (synth/perc/div), Peter Wolf (voc/perc/div) these four produce live partially improvised sound films as from another planet. Doppelpluss musically darts sideways between all stiles. They sit down winkingly between all chairs and create alternating hot and cold acoustical baths of emotion. Dynamical meditative sound trips grow to impressive psycho drama, change to funny folk, change to philosophical tender loving care, change to absurd theater. Exciting music performance therefore and who knows where the journey goes to.

canal (2003-4, 7m 26s)
canal by Steve Adam and Thomas Reiner, integrates diverse sound materials both collected and generated individually by the two collaborators. The submission and integration of these materials took the form of a musical ping-pong game in which one collaborator would receive the latest version of the track from the other, take it away for a couple of weeks, and return it with new materials added and changes made. The materials include a processed drum pattern created with a drum ensemble from the music software Reaktor, additional drum patterns made up from a range of drum samples, simple chord progressions, and samples taken from site recordings in 2003 in Venice and Florence. The title canal is a reference to both Venice and the virtual path created by the back-and-forth motion of ideas between two collaborators.
ephemeral densities (2004, 7m11sec)
ephemeral densities, by Thomas Reiner, explores changes of texture and sound colour. Four sound objects provide the source material for the work: (1) a synthesized sound that resembles the chirping call of the male cricket, (2) a fast changing, busy sound that appeared suddenly and surprisingly as a sonic artefact while undertaking site recordings with a minidisk recorder in Victoria’s Grampians, (3) a very low bass sound, and (4) a metallic sounding drum loop. The main effect used in the work is a grain delay that divides the original sound object into tiny particles, which are then delayed individually, allowing for extreme modifications of the original sound. The editing and sound processing of the piece was done with Ableton Live a computer program that combines elements of improvisation, composition, and performance.

Tetovo: 2001 (2005, 2m23sec)
Tetovo: 2001 is the composer’s reflections on the events that occurred in the Republic of Macedonia city in 2001. Terrorists attacked the city of Tetovo resulting in many civilian lives being lost and resulting in the mobilisation of the Macedonian Army for the first time since the end of the Second World War. The unfortunate response from the majority of western powers actually encouraged the terrorists and supported their unjustifiable claims over sovereign Macedonian land. Political pressure from the USA has seen the recent ‘administrative’ division of Macedonia. Supporting actions of terrorism and terrorists is exposing the hypocrisy of so called ‘western democracy’ and the ‘war on terror’ This event is an example of the ongoing struggle for basic human rights for the Macedonians, namely the right to self-identity. Since the break-up of Yugoslavia, the cultural identity of the Macedonian’s is being consistently denied and challenged. Attacks on national history, religion, and even ethnicity from all neighboring countries, has seen devastating outcomes on the developing country. The composition is largely constructed from vocal manipulations of the ‘Queen of Macedonian Song’ Vaska Ilieva’s [1921-2001] interpretation of the traditional song ogreala mesechina (shining moon). The song was recorded by the composer in 1992. The song expresses the size of ethnographic Macedonia through a 19th century folk perspective. Finally, Tetovo: 2001 is viewed as a neo-traditional composition, continuing the tradition of Macedonian folklore. Even after a century of violence against the Macedonians, the memory of the past continues, presenting the truth of the Macedonian identity through song and music.

Ghost Towns (2004, 18m20sec)
Recorded in the later half of 2003, this composition is composed largely of field recordings, the only processing being EQ and pitch shifting. The work is an abstracted impressionist sound portrait, sketching out the isolated soundscapes that exist in the forgotten realms of the Australia outback. It highlights the rich and at times unexpectedly synthetic sound world existing in these vast spaces. Cicadas are matched against 44-gallon drums popping in the morning sun and wire fences resonating to the backdrop of sites such as a haunted hotel in far northern Australia.

Familiar Circuits (2004, 13m22sec)
Familiar Circuits is an excerpt from a sound installation of the same name, exploring the familiar and unique components of the sound environment in Canberra, Australia. Ongoing processing of the audio material creates a surreal soundscape, where familiar elements are emphasised and repeated, becoming a new sonic atmosphere of their own. Segments of audio are returned to again and again, referencing the circular nature of this particular city’s town plan.
CITY2CITY (2004, 10m0sec)
CITY2CITY explores the notion of entropy and changing sound worlds within a city environment. Sounds recorded in the Australian cities of Canberra and Sydney transmute into new forms, gradually oscillating between the recognisable and the unfamiliar. The experience is that of a city soundscape’s decay and re-emergence; each evolution bringing a new imaginary city to life.

Title:
Stammer (2004, 5m30sec)
stammer: the shock waves and sound waves erupting from terror-bombings fade quickly, but they strike immeasurable resonances of sorrow through minds and lives. Such cruel detonations also set information machines chattering, hammering out rumour, opinion, fiction, and fear. ‘Stammer’ captures the anxious and relentless voices of mass-media data on the short-wave bands; colloquays of blind, yammering apparatus, triggered by violence.
VNGQRT (2005, 6m40sec)
VNGQRT: not long ago, a small but penetrating Australian voice was silenced. VNG first blipped into the Australian ether in 1964, providing a standard frequency and time signal service for navigators, surveyors, astronomers, ham radio operators and shortwave listeners throughout the South Pacific. The warm, clear voice of VNG announcer Graham Conolly soon became familiar, even in the most remote atoll or lonely farmhouse, and the VNG pip was steady and welcome as a lighthouse. In 1987, VNG was shut down, much of its role taken by Global Positioning Satellites. A consortium of VNG users was formed, money raised, and VNG blipped again from a new location, but costs finally came to outweigh benefits, and VNG’s last pip was heard on 31 December 2002, at 23:43:43 UTC.
