Videoart feature – selections from Canada, Australia, Netherlands

On 10 January 2001, Wilfried started AND – Artists Network Database – http://and.nmartproject.net – in order to create a central space for the biographies of the expanding number of participating artists. Actually, it was a good idea, because many artists were submitting and participating frequently, on one hand, and it was only necessary to link the biography, on the other hand, these listings were promoting at the same time the involved artists and their connection to the projects they were involved in.
But after some years, the problem became obvious, that these biographies were not updating themselves automatically, most artists did not become active and were updating their biography, on the other hand it was not possible for AND to research regularly for bio updates on the net or contacting the artists. So, in many cases the biographies stopped being updated at a certain point and the actually fundamental value of AND when it was founded was slowly decreasing by the increasing distance of time. Now 20 years after its foundation, the information AND is providing have nearly a statistic value, yet, until they are updated once hopefully.

The artists – a value

AND as an individual project was the expression of what kind of value the artists participating in his projects had to Wilfried. Particularly when he was starting in 2000 his new experimental life after the coma as a creative person, the relevance artists were giving to his activities by submitting, contributing and participating was representing that fundamental motivation, at all, to continue and the confirmation, that Wilfried was on a good way. Each new artist was becoming a member expanding the community of like-minded. How much this aspect meant to Wilfried, can be measured by facing Wilfried’s isolation after the coma & the loss of memory. As his personal initiative, Wilfried started communicating with artists from all over the world via the Internet, geographic distance did not exist, because communicating via email was possible nearly in real time. So to Wilfried, these establishing contacts were forming the basis for sometimes even very close professional relations and friendships lasting in some cases even 20 years. Especially when Wilfried was able again to travel in 2002, he was meeting during the following years many of these virtual friends on festivals or other events all over the world as physical persons intensifying such existing relations.

Probably these artists friends may have seen the things differently, of course, because Wilfried was for them no more than any other artist, curator of festival director, but it was that relation without the “emotional” and geographic distance which made especially Wilfried’s activities and the increasing number of projects only possible. He did not face the artists as objects or figures of a chess game, but their value as creative beings.
Therefore it is not possible, at all, for a non-initiated to estimate the value the artists had and have to Wilfried and the manifestation of NewMediaFest2020.
