Arad

Today, is the final day of the CologneOFF 2011 presentation @ Arad Art Museum, a collaboration with Kinema Ikon, curated by Calin Man. The presentation and exhibition started on 30 March, and Wilfried arrived on 29 March already in order to prepare the exhibition at Arad Art Museum. Arad is a nice provincial town which is located close to the Hungarian border, thus quite far away from the Romanian capital Bucharest. It is typical, that in the process of the political change regarding the collaps of Ceausescu’s dictatorship, Arad played a particular role as place of resistance, and so did the local artists gathered in Kinema Ikon.
One of the most positive experiences Wilfried made during all his travels, to learn more of the local history and place it in the context of other places at the same time, particularly concerning the political change after the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was most interesting, because before the political change the history of the countries behind the Iron (Communist) curtain was widely unknown. It is and was concerning the role of the Romanian border region close the Hungary which had compared with Romania a quite liberal Communiste regime. Politics – historical and current – are present whereever Wilfried is moving.
Arad has a quite monumental art museum, which like museums at other places – in the difficult economical times seems to be without any visitor. It is not completely clear, whether art, especially new experimental forms of contemporary art has any follower – besides some local artists living in a kind of “diaspora”. Whenever Wilfried is visiting the museum these days, he and Calin Man, his host, are walking through empty (empty of visitors) rooms- and finally they enter on the second floor a large exhibtion space where the video exhibition and screening will be installed.
Wilfried prepared an extensive video program for installation, projection and screening – according to his concept of presenting a diversity of artistic and regarding the 2011 programs also a diversity of curatorial concepts. Unusual ideas for such a small town located at the periphery – and much too ambitious from the point of view of an ambitious inventor like Wilfried. So, nobody was surprised that Wilfried’s presentation and the audio-visual exhibtion are attended only by a small community of enthusiasts for new art, the event was too short for reaching a wider audience – lasting just 3-4 days – that’s always crucial with such festival-like events. Wilfried isn’t surprised about the limited quantity of this community, but disappointed that in 2011 at too many places – whereever in the world – the enthusiasm for audio-visual art does not find a wider response and audience.
