Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires Biblioteca Nacional – venue of FIVA Video Art Festival

Another South american collaboration was again in Buenos Aires between 2012 and 2016: FIVA – Festival Internacional de Video Arte – taking place in November at Biblioteca Nacional, where Wilfried presented already in 2005 his project “Women: Memory of Repression in Argentina”. However, he did not attend any of the three events in 2012, 2015 and 2016, unfortunately, but South America is not just around the corner and long distance travels cause always health problems due to the jetlag. Instead of this, Wilfried invited in 2016 the FIVA curators to prepare a curatorial contribution to be presented in India – CologneOFF 2016 India @ CeC – Carnival of e-Creativity in Shillong, the capital of the India state of Meghalaya. Although Wilfried likes the kind of networked collaborations, due to the fact that they are sometimes restricted to physical screenings, and the curators often have just a one-time authorization, Wilfried is not able to promote such curated programes the way he would like to do. In so far, also this curatorial collaboration was not sustainable, which is always a pity, because Wilfried is always getting the idea, that too many people do not understand the meaning of networking. But nevertheless, he was very glad, of course to continue his collaborations in Argentina this way, which started already in 2000. The strong feelings for this country will always remain!

About FIVA

Since its inception in the mid-1960s, video art has been gaining space and prestige within the art scene. Its presence in Museums, Fairs and Biennials is broad and central. The massification of the technological means necessary for the production of this artistic format (from a cell phone to PCs and their simple editing programs) makes video art a democratic practice with extensive insertion in all social strata, allowing to defend creative freedom of the authors and artistic experimentation, thereby mitigating the danger of the implantation of a single model of thought, which sacrifices the diversity and legitimacy of the rest of the national and cultural identities in its path. In Argentina, despite having widely recognized artists and theorists, an international level festival has not been developed, giving us an excellent opportunity for FIVA to become an excellent window that shows us to the world, that connects us and allows new ones to circulate aesthetic sensitivities, forms and strategies of communication.

About
CologneOFF VIII – Continental Drift

The 8th festival edition in sequence of Cologne International Videoart Festival is standing under the motto “Continental Drift” and the specific relations of the continents to each other, the values of life in the contemporary world and the perspectives of the human race on our continents – therefore it is understandable that special issues are related to human rights and the living environment – and the individual and collective identity and memory. But “Continental Drift” is also related to art and its relation, values and relevance in human life and society. The selection is presenting a diversity of aspects of art & moving images. The festival is asking questions, whereby the films and videos do not answer them, but represent just a tool for inspiring the audience to find answers by reflecting. Eventually.
