Silvia de Gennaro
Video Artist of the Month October 2020 – Silvia de Gennaro
Silvia de Gennaro, of Italian origin- following an original artistic approach via animation, appeared in 2011 for the 1st time in the CologneOFF festival cosmos. For Wilfried as both, an artist and curator, the divers forms of artistic animations had been always of particular interest, because artists like Silvia de Gennaro design their creative environment themselves they are acting in. In many cases, and Silvia de Gennaro belongs to them, they found their own very original multi-leveled language. Wilfried had the chance, that Silvia was regularly submitting new videos, which were inviting him to plan for October 2020 featuring Silvia de Gennaro as a creatrice and Videoartist of The Month, by presenting 10 videos from the years 2008 – 2016. They give a good idea, how Silvia is reflecting the world she is living in, from the global to local and individual issues.

1. Look Up, 2008, 6.02
The current lack of human values generates a superficial and egocentric society and induces to live without valuing. In other words ,without knowing how to observe and take a stand on reality. It’s necessary then to look up beyond the own borders to have a perspective and empatic vision of the world and of the others.
An urban guerrilla warfare where the eyes are used as a destabilizing weapon.

2. This Sumnmer Mosquitos Will be Worse Than Ever, 2010, 6:20
This summer mosquito will be worse than ever” is an article headline. The most used words by media and politicians are: alert, danger and catastrophe. The violence wielded by an alarmist and defeatist society produces scared and secluded men who have no ambition. In the video the protagonist shelters in a garret, where she is weaving a spider web to catch the “malicious” mosquito …

5. Rubbish world, 2012, 4:05
The world’s economy revolves around the production of waste, from consumerism that leads to a temporary use of the products, through Western civilization’s bulimic attitude towards food, down to the legal and the illegal garbage business.
“Monno Monnezza” (Rubbish World) is a kind of micro-documentary of what happens around a dumpster, there’s who takes and who throws. The movie is set in a bill of zero value issued by the State of Rubbish World.

This is not a horror movie, 2014, 06:24
7. This is not a horror movie, 2014, 06:24
It’s not a horror movie but a displaying of the horror that surrounds us. Evil seems to have ousted the good from the face of the earth. Indifference is one of its manifestations, less obvious than others, but no less harmful.

8. Travel Notebooks: Perugia, Italy, 2014, 2:29
Perugia is a tight network of streets; it goes up and down, with no feeling of time.
It is a magical three-dimensional chessboard, where blades of light alternate with shadowy shapes, revealing the soft pink stone or the dark dampness of time.
Perugia is a fertile woman’s womb, the cellar where the most precious wine is hidden.
Space of Memory, 2014, 6:23
9. Space of Memory, 2014, 6:23
A future -past chases and mixes itself with the current, representing past events still to happen. As in Vico’s philosophy, the recourse of history takes place when distancing from reason and memory of the past is lost. Iin an indefinite age – we’ll find out when is it just at the end – a father takes his son to visit a space” eco-gallery”, where all the evils that have destroyed their planet are shown.
